A common example of a type of corrosion is rust. In rust, an oxidation reaction takes place in the Iron atoms in a solid solution. This reaction produces oxides and/or salts of the original metal. The transformation of the metal over time can lead to holes being formed, as well as a general loss of material which always means some loss in strength.
